Jakarta's Public Transportation System: A 20-Year-Old Tariff Stagnation
The Jakarta provincial administration has been facing criticism for its inability to adjust the tariff of TransJakarta, one of the city's primary public transportation modes. Despite improvements in connectivity and coverage, with 91% of the province being covered by various transportation services such as MRT, LRT, and Jaklingko, there is no plan to increase the fare.
According to Syafrin Liputo, head of Provincial Transportation Department (Dishub Jakarta), the current tariff system has been in place for over two decades. The last adjustment was made 20 years ago at a rate of Rp3,500 per ride. Since then, inflation and cost of living have increased significantly.
The administration acknowledges that the current tariff structure is below the minimum wage requirement, which has risen by six times since 2005. With an average monthly income of Rp5.3 million, the calculation suggests that the current fare for TransJakarta should be around Rp32.2 million per ride.
However, Syafrin assured that there are no plans to increase the fare for MRT and LRT, citing a recent study that showed the willingness-to-pay and ability-to-pay of passengers were still within the existing tariff range. The subsidy for these services was calculated at an average of Rp6,000 per passenger in 2024.
The transportation department is currently conducting a review of the TransJakarta fare system, considering the significant increase in costs since 2005.
