TWO BELGIAN PRISONERS TO BE SENT BACK TO NETHERLANDS AFTER INDONESIA RECEIVES REQUEST FROM DUTCH GOVERNMENT.
The Indonesian government has agreed to send back two Dutch prisoners, Siegfried Mets and Ali Tokman, after receiving a request from the Dutch government through the "transfer for prisoners" mechanism. The decision was announced by Minister of Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Transmigration Yusril Ihza Mahendra during a press conference in Jakarta.
According to Yusril, two individuals have been requested to be transferred to the Netherlands due to humanitarian reasons as they are elderly and currently suffering from illness. The minister stated that the transfer would not change the court's decision in Indonesia, but rather, it would be the responsibility of the Dutch government to continue with the legal process.
The two prisoners were sentenced to death and a life sentence for their involvement in narcotics trafficking. However, Yusril clarified that the transfer does not mean they will be given pardon or remission. The decision is now in the hands of the Dutch authorities, who will determine if any mercy will be shown to them.
