If the drought persists, widespread closures, job losses, and supply chain disruptions can be expected – at a time when consumers increasingly demand more sustainable seafood options.

Governments and businesses must take concrete steps to mitigate damage by investing in water-saving technologies, implementing efficient irrigation systems, and developing long-term strategies for adapting to a changing climate.

Policymakers’ priorities have long prioritized agriculture over fish farming and other industries. As Platon lamented in Romania, “We were left with no water for the fish.” This must change – policymakers must recognize the value of preserving Europe’s aquatic ecosystems by rethinking their priorities.

The drought-stricken rivers serve as a stark reminder of our vulnerability to climate change. We can no longer afford to treat these issues separately from economic or environmental concerns – they are intertwined threads in the fabric of our societies.

A wake-up call like this is precisely what we need, but only if policymakers and businesses are willing to listen. As Jovanovic aptly put it: “No one can remember anything like this.” It’s time to make sure that no one forgets the lessons of this crisis – before it’s too late.
