Jakarta's Odd-Even Rule Returns on Thursday: A Reminder to Carefully Plan Your Commute
Starting this Thursday, October 9th, 2025, Jakarta's odd-even rule will be enforced once again to manage traffic flow. On this day, vehicles with odd-numbered license plates (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9) are allowed to pass through certain roads, while those with even-numbered plates (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8) are prohibited.
This regulation is one of the measures implemented by the government to control congestion and reduce private car usage during peak hours. The rules will remain in effect from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and again from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM WIB, outside these time slots, all vehicles can pass freely.
Violating this rule may result in fines, with a maximum of Rp 500,000 or up to two months in prison, even if detected by traffic cameras installed at several points.
Besides the regulations, there is also an application from Instruksi Menteri Dalam Negeri (Inmendagri) Nomor 26 Tahun 2022 and Surat Edaran Menteri Perhubungan Nomor 46 Tahun 2022 that serve as a basis for the implementation of traffic control in Jakarta.
The government has also introduced a system of electronic traffic enforcement using cameras, where penalties will be given if there are violations. As a result, Jakarta's residents are advised to plan their trips carefully, check their vehicle numbers before traveling, and consider alternative routes to avoid congestion on restricted roads.
Besides private cars, the public transportation network, including TransJakarta, KRL, LRT, and MRT, can be an excellent option for those who want to get around without worrying about breaking the rules. This not only provides convenience but also helps reduce traffic congestion and pollution.
Technology also plays a vital role in ensuring smooth travel times. Navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze are able to provide alternative routes and real-time road conditions, enabling drivers to avoid congested areas and estimate their journey time more accurately.
The increased volume of traffic has led the city government to implement additional measures to manage it, as data from the Dinas Perhubungan DKI Jakarta reveals a 6.25% increase in traffic volume. With this new odd-even rule, citizens can expect to see improved traffic management and reduced congestion on Jakarta's roads.
