At least 35 students from SMPN 1 Wedi in Klaten, Central Java, were suspected of food poisoning after consuming a free breakfast program (MBG) provided by the school administration. The students, mostly between the ages of 11 and 17, arrived at the Puskesmas Wedi clinic on Wednesday morning with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
The situation was further complicated when another student, an 11-year-old girl named AR from SDIT Bahrul Ulum Desa Kadibolo, Kecamatan Wedi, also fell ill. Her mother said that her daughter had eaten the same breakfast program provided by the school, but only began experiencing symptoms after 02:00 WIB.
According to the clinic's records, a total of 35 students were treated for suspected food poisoning, with 1 student observed at the clinic and 19 receiving treatment at home. The remaining 15 students were referred to the RSD Bagas Waras hospital for further treatment.
Personnel from the TRC BPBD Klaten and TNI also arrived on the scene to assist in evacuating patients. The situation was further complicated when it became clear that some students had already consumed the contaminated food before symptoms began to manifest, as stated by Dr. Anggit Budiarto, the head of the Dinas Kesehatan Klaten.
The authorities have yet to provide a statement on how the school administration managed the food safety situation. The incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of the school's health and safety protocols in preventing such incidents in the future.
