Melting Point: The Himalayas' Unheeded Warning Signs Recent floods in Nepal and Tibet were not unexpected, but rather the catastrophic manifestation of a long documented trend.
Since March 2026, scientists at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) have sounded the alarm on rapidly melting glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH), warning of escalating risks of catastrophic floods and other cryosphere related disasters.
The ICIMOD reports painted a dire picture: glacier ice loss had doubled since 2000, with the smallest and most vulnerable glaciers shrinking at an alarming rate.
