The rise of datacenters has been hailed as a crucial step towards a more efficient and connected world. However, beneath the sheen of technological progress lies a toxic legacy that threatens to undermine the environment.

A recent incident in Wyoming has brought this issue into sharp focus. A Meta datacenter’s wastewater was found to contain a rare bacterium, Cupriavidus gilardii, which can pose serious health risks if ingested or inhaled. This case is alarming, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Datacenters across the US are facing growing scrutiny over their environmental impact, with concerns ranging from water pollution to wetland destruction.

Datacenters consume massive amounts of water – a mid-sized facility uses around 300,000 gallons per day for cooling purposes. This wastewater can contain toxic pollutants like heavy metals, Pfas (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The consequences are far-reaching: not only do these pollutants harm local ecosystems, but they also contaminate public drinking supplies.

The industry has responded by downplaying the severity of the issue while touting its own “green” initiatives. Datacenters like Meta claim to use closed-loop cooling systems that minimize water waste. Critics argue, however, that this technology is little more than a PR stunt designed to distract from the industry’s true environmental footprint.

Datacenters are often built in areas with lax regulations and poor enforcement, allowing companies like Google and Microsoft to sidestep transparency and accountability. Local communities bear the brunt of their pollution as a result. The Waterkeeper Alliance has documented 55 campaigns across the US focused on datacenter-related issues – a clear indication that the public is growing increasingly aware of this hidden threat.

The backlash against datacenters is gaining momentum, with several lawsuits filed against companies like QTS and Vulcan Infrastructure and Power. These cases will undoubtedly be contentious but represent a crucial turning point in the debate over the environmental impact of datacenters.

Policymakers and industry leaders must confront the darker side of the digital revolution as AI technology continues to advance at breakneck speed. The consequences of unchecked growth are clear: toxic pollution, ecosystem destruction, and public health risks. It’s high time for a national conversation about the true costs of our addiction to datacenters – and a moratorium on these facilities until their environmental impact is genuinely mitigated.

The stakes are too high to ignore. As Yvonne Taylor, vice-president of Seneca Lake Guardian, noted: “These facilities are spreading across the country like a cancer.” It’s time for us to take action – and demand that our leaders do the same. The future of our environment depends on it.
