Roblox Commits to Privacy Overhaul After eSafety Discovers Adults Can Contact Children via Gaming Platform
As the world’s largest online gaming platform for kids, Roblox has long prided itself on being a safe haven for young gamers. However, beneath its colorful avatars and immersive virtual worlds lies a darker reality: one where adults can easily contact and manipulate children without proper safeguards in place.
A recent investigation by Australia’s eSafety commissioner revealed that Roblox’s lax approach to child safety had left it vulnerable to exploitation. Children’s profiles were visible to anyone on the platform, including adults who could send connection requests without parental consent. This finding was a stark reminder of the failures of tech companies like Roblox to prioritize the well-being of their youngest users.
In response to eSafety’s concerns, Roblox has promised to make changes to its platform. However, these commitments are long overdue. In December last year, the company introduced some basic measures to limit adult-child interactions on its platform. These measures have proven insufficient to prevent exploitation, and it was only when a regulator stepped in that Roblox agreed to take more substantial steps to protect children.
The fact that Roblox has been allowed to operate with such lax safety standards is concerning given the growing body of evidence that online gaming platforms are increasingly being used as hunting grounds for predators and abusers. The company’s willingness to engage in “constructive dialogue” with eSafety should not be seen as a substitute for meaningful action.
Roblox’s popularity among Australian children, particularly 1.7 million who use it regularly, adds to the pressure on the company to get its house in order. As Julie Inman Grant, Australia’s eSafety commissioner, noted, “We have been engaging with Roblox for some time at senior levels about our concerns and the company has responded, making a number of improvements to its service… Their executives clearly understand that verifiable safety measures are critical to their long-term viability and success.”
Roblox’s future hangs in the balance. Will it be enough for the company to simply meet regulatory requirements, or will it undergo a fundamental transformation to prioritize child safety above all else? The answer lies in the company’s willingness to engage with third-party auditors to assess its safety measures and implement meaningful changes within the next three months.
The clock is ticking for Roblox. If the company fails to deliver on its commitments, eSafety has warned it may seek a court order to ensure compliance. The consequences of failure would be severe not just for Roblox but also for the many children who use its platform every day. As Inman Grant noted, “We have been very clear that we will take action if necessary.”
The move to third-party auditing is a crucial step towards rebuilding trust in Roblox’s commitment to child safety. However, it’s just the beginning – what’s needed now is a fundamental shift in the company’s approach to protecting its youngest users. No longer can tech companies like Roblox rely on piecemeal measures and lip service to regulatory bodies; they must take bold action to safeguard the digital well-being of children.
As the online gaming landscape continues to evolve, one thing is clear: child safety cannot be an afterthought. It’s time for companies like Roblox to step up and show that they’re willing to do whatever it takes to protect their most vulnerable users – or risk facing the consequences.

While Roblox's commitment to overhaul its child safety measures is welcome, the company's tardiness in taking action raises questions about regulatory effectiveness. The eSafety commissioner's investigation highlights a broader issue: tech companies often only respond to external pressure, rather than proactively prioritizing child protection. To truly safeguard young users, platforms like Roblox must adopt more robust security features and default settings that assume children are interacting with unknown adults. A shift towards greater transparency in platform design is long overdue – and regulators should hold companies accountable for meeting this standard.

While Roblox's commitment to overhauling its child safety measures is welcome, the company's sluggish response to this issue raises important questions about regulatory oversight and industry accountability. Specifically, what steps will be taken to prevent exploitation on platforms beyond just Roblox? The eSafety commissioner's investigation highlights the need for a more comprehensive approach to regulating online gaming interactions involving minors. Until such an effort materializes, parents and policymakers should remain vigilant in holding tech companies accountable for safeguarding their youngest users' safety and well-being.

It's about time Roblox took child safety seriously. The company's reluctance to implement robust safeguards is staggering given its knowledge of past incidents and ongoing concerns from regulators like eSafety. A more significant concern is how Roblox will actually enforce these promised changes, particularly among its vast user base where parents may not be tech-savvy or familiar with platform settings. Unless the company takes concrete steps to educate users about new safety features and provide robust reporting mechanisms for suspicious activity, its overhaul will remain a hollow promise.
