The rollout of E20 petrol in India has been hailed as a game-changer in reducing pollution and curbing crude oil imports. However, beneath this supposed success story lies a more sinister reality – one that threatens Indian car owners’ livelihoods and the auto industry’s foundations.

Internal communications among executives at Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra reveal concerns over contamination in petrol blended with 20% ethanol. The data compiled by these companies represents the most extensive fuel-testing exercise undertaken since E20’s nationwide rollout last year. This exercise has yielded alarming results.

The industry’s findings indicate that chloride levels in E20 samples range from 6 parts per million (ppm) to as high as 570 ppm, far exceeding the government-prescribed maximum permissible level of 3 ppm. Moreover, moisture levels in some samples have been detected at an astonishing 13,000 ppm – more than four times the allowed limit.

These findings are not isolated incidents. Senior executives had discussed concerns over contamination with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas as early as July. Despite these warnings, the government continues to tout E20 petrol’s safety, citing a supposedly rigorous testing exercise that identified only four instances of contamination.

However, this exercise took place behind closed doors. State-run oil marketing companies conducted random testing at retail outlets two weeks before the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) submitted its letter on fuel contamination. The results are conveniently shrouded in secrecy – but the government’s own data suggests E20 is safe to use.

Maruti Suzuki’s Anoop Bhat expressed concern over high chloride levels detected during testing, implying that presenting more data would make little difference. His words reflect a sense of resignation, as if he knows that no matter how much evidence is presented, nothing will change.

The Indian auto industry’s own data paints a dire picture. With over 250 fuel samples collected from retail outlets across 21 states and Union territories, it becomes increasingly difficult to ignore the evidence. Chloride levels range from 6 to 570 ppm in different regions – a stark reminder of E20 petrol’s patchy implementation nationwide.

SIAM’s withdrawal of its letter on fuel contamination has added to the confusion. According to SIAM, some numbers required “authentication” – a euphemism for covering up the embarrassing truth. The industry body claims it plans to undertake a comprehensive scientific study, but one can’t help but wonder if this is just another delaying tactic.

The consequences of contamination are severe. Car owners are being forced to bear the brunt, with thousands already reporting decreased mileage and increased wear and tear. High moisture levels in E20 fuel can cause vehicles to stop functioning immediately after refuelling, posing a significant risk to public health.

The question now is: what’s next? Will India’s government continue to push forward with its biofuel agenda, ignoring the mounting evidence of contamination? Or will it take concrete action to address this crisis and ensure Indian car owners are protected from the fallout?

With millions of Indians dependent on their cars for daily commutes and work, the stakes couldn’t be higher. It’s time for the government to come clean about E20 petrol and take concrete steps to rectify this situation. Anything less would be a betrayal of the trust placed in them by the nation.
