British Columbia’s drought-stricken watersheds are struggling to maintain even a semblance of normalcy, prompting volunteers and conservation efforts to rescue salmon from drying streams. While the dedication and ingenuity of individuals like Bob Crandall, treasurer of the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society, are admirable, short-term interventions may be doing more harm than good.
The scale of the problem is staggering: parts of B.C. have been severely affected by drought, with conditions prompting government intervention in watersheds like the Salmon River. The Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society has been engaged in “fry salvage” efforts for over three decades, but even their experienced hands are struggling to keep up.
Crandall’s passion and commitment to preserving the ecosystem are inspiring, particularly given his personal connection to the environment – he was born in a rainbow trout hatchery. However, experts warn that this hand-to-mouth approach has its limits. The Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation, a key partner in these efforts, recognizes that relocating fish can cause stress and injuries, as well as logistical challenges and costs.
Similar concerns are being raised elsewhere. In France, Jean-Pierre Faure of the Fédération de Pêche du Rhône is sounding the alarm about the limitations of short-term interventions like rescue fishing. The extreme heat waves have left fish populations reeling, and Faure warns that current management programs are woefully unprepared for a changing climate.
The issue at hand goes beyond the immediate plight of these communities or species; it raises fundamental questions about how we approach environmental conservation in an era marked by accelerating climate change. Rather than relying on ad-hoc interventions, policymakers and stakeholders must acknowledge that ecosystem restoration and water-use management are essential components of any viable long-term strategy.
Thousands of kilometers of drying rivers and millions of dollars spent on relocation efforts that may be causing more harm than good underscore the need for a new approach. As the climate continues to shift, it’s time to reassess our priorities and move beyond piecemeal solutions. The stakes are high, but so is the potential for real change.
A shift towards proactive measures like river restoration and sustainable agriculture practices could be on the horizon for B.C.’s water management policies.
